The game isn't very scary, but it messes with you at the right times, including some well designed puzzles and locked contraptions. Its sound design is creepy, and the combination of voicemails, in-world sfx, and dialogue all contribute to the game's consistent unease. It runs really smooth, with occasional hiccups at doors, which is more than excusable. Shattered Memories is an impressive title for the Wii. They have such an interesting psychoanalysis breakdown at the game's conclusion that it seems like a waste it wasn't further implemented. I wish they pushed the line further and changed up characters or even environments to reflect the darker revelations you can pull from this information. Shattered Memories claims that these answers directly affect the game, but I didn't notice too much of a difference, apart from following conversations with the doctor and the ending. The game is segmented by a psychiatrist who asks the player to answer a variety of questions about themselves (or not). I would have preferred if the escape was more of a button masher, and if these escape scenarios had a little bit more flavor. Unfortunately, there isn't any enemy variety, they aren't hard to dodge, and when they do grab you, you need to perform a swift motion which doesn't always register right. Some of these are enjoyable to start, running with your heart pumping to escape the various demons clawing for your back. There is no combat in this game and enemy encounters are relegated to specific sequences in confined labyrinths of corridors. Shattered Memories is less straight horror and more a psychological thriller. These and warnings of the supernatural are played through the speaker in the controller, and while it isn't the highest sound quality, it adds to the VHS and rougher feel of the game's aesthetic. The WiiMote also functions as your cellphone, as you receive voicemail across your journey. The movement isn't too tanky, the flashlight casts just the right amount of creepy shadows, and waving it around to find the small sets of puzzles in the environment is enjoyable. 80% of this game is just you and a flashlight, so it's great that everything controls and feels fantastic. The majority of the gameplay is skulking around town with your flashlight to get to the next destination, stopping to pick up collectible mementos and ghostly images along the way. You play as Harry Mason, a man trying to find his daughter amidst a snowstorm in the town of Silent Hill. Speaking to those Wii gimmicks, right away, this console is not a hinderance to the game at all. While not everything is a home run, as a first time Silent Hill player, SM meets and exceeds my expectations. Motion controls mixed with a beloved franchise on top of it being a reimagining of the series' first outing puts a lot of pressure upon Shattered Memories to be something notable. So fucking awful, oh I'm so angryĨh PlayedSilent Hill: Shattered Memories could have had all the trappings of a horror title on the Wii. It's just disrespectful to the original creators and fans of Silent Hill. Well it made it less palatable because now I'm just angry these characters and general Silent Hill world were utterly spat on with this game. It is not a fucking reimagining, it's just a really bad game that would never in a million years sell, so they slapped an already known name on it in an attempt to make it palatable. The characters didn't look the same, act the same, or really have any of the same interactions as the original game. Or the fact that despite it being considered a "reimagining," the game is just its own awful story with its own characters that have nothing to do with Silent Hill, but with Silent Hill characters' names pasted on them. Oh and don't let me forget the little therapist segments. You wander around, listen to voicemails and read texts, watch a cutscene every once in a while, and also every once in a while they sprinkle in these abysmal "underworld" segments where you just run until you find the exit and these sad excuses for monsters (all the same monster too, they had one singular monster in the game but copy/pasted) chase you and there is little feeling of danger and it's just a waste of time that adds literally nothing to the experience except rage. I feel like an overwhelming majority of the game consists of calling numbers and "listening" to voicemails (aka reading cuz despite 90% of the story being fed through your phone, they hired no voice actors to bring that to life). The gameplay is abysmal, if you wanna call it gameplay.
